• Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi passed away in Chennai. He was the 94-year-old veteran leader of Tamil Nadu.  He started as a screenwriter in Tamil film industry and was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five-term. 
  • Australian professional golfer Jarrod Lyle has died after a long battle with cancer, aged 36. The Australian won twice on the feeder Web.com tour in 2008 and played 121 US PGA Tour tournaments during his professional career. 
  • Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee passed away. He was 89 years old. 
  •  Nobel Prize-winning British author V S Naipaul has died at the age of 85Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul who was born in Trinidad wrote more than 30 books and won the Nobel Literature Prize in 2001. 
  •  Chhattisgarh Governor Balramji Das Tandon passed away at the age of 90. 
  • Former India cricket captain Ajit Wadekar, who led the team to path-breaking Test wins in England and the West Indies, passed away after prolonged illness. He was 77.
  •  Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has passed away aged 93 in Delhi. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was three times Prime Minister of India. First Term: May 1996, Second Term: 1998-1999 and Third Term: 1999-2004.
  •  US singer Aretha Franklin has died at the age of 76. The “Queen of Soul” was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and made her debut in 1961. Her style on such hits as “Respect” and “Natural Woman” attracted fans all over the world. She received the Grammy Award 18 times and was the first female vocalist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
  • Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has passed away at the age of 80. Annan, who was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, served at the UN from 1997 to 2006. 
  • Uri Avnery, a trailblazing Israeli journalist and peace activist and one of the first to openly advocate for a Palestinian state passed away at the age of 94.
  •  Eminent Indian writer and journalist Kuldip Nayar passed away in New Delhi following a brief illness. He was 95. Mr. Nayar was originally born in Sialkot in 1923. His famous autobiography was "Beyond The Lines". He was also the High Commissioner of India to the U.K. 
  • US Senator John McCain, a celebrated Vietnam war hero, passed away after losing a battle to brain cancer. He was 81. The six-term senator, McCain was also a Republican presidential nominee in 2008.
